The phlebotomist is responsible for performing collection of blood specimens, ensuring patient safety, positive patient identification and specimen integrity. Responsible for entering patient information into the laboratory information system (LIS), and processing specimens for testing.
Responsible for the collection and processing of blood specimens ensuring patient safety, positive patient identification and specimen integrity.
Requires professional knowledge of phlebotomy procedures techniques; various specimen collection equipment, including the appropriate use of safety collection devices; and a working knowledge of the type and minimum specimen required for a broad range of tests.
Maintain and properly store adequate supply volumes; ensure supply stock in within expiration dates; place orders in a timely manner; and ensure stewardship of laboratory supplies.
Assume responsibility for cleanliness of working areas, safe disposal of wastes, proper cleanup of biological spill and overall adherence to the laboratory safety policies and procedures.
Requires proper specimen handling including but not limited to centrifugation, packaging and transporting specimens to the laboratory or preparing a package for shipment via air carrier in accordance with federal regulations.
Participation in continuing education.
