Registers, collects, labels, and processes patient specimens for testing in a timely manner including routine and advanced venipuncture along with other specimen collection as required. Performs other duties as requested. Maintains the stock of commonly used supplies, performing routine inspections of supply levels to ensure adequate availability. Performs preventive maintenance on equipment.

Takes prompt action to resolve any problem with the registration, collection or processing of all specimens including referral specimens using available procedure manuals or reference materials. May assume in charge responsibilities in the absence of supervisory staff. Adheres to strict hospital protocol regarding patient identification; ensures that each patient is positively identified prior to registration procedures and specimen collection. Collects patient blood samples by performing venipunctures as ordered and within the prescribed time-frame following strict medical protocol.

Labels each specimen accurately according to established laboratory procedures prior to processing. Gives patients and outreach clients instruction as necessary regarding specimen collection. Works with supervisor to formulate plan for professional development. Attends educational in-services and training classes for various computer systems necessary for patient registration and referral testing.

Operates departmental computer programs to register and order laboratory tests and performs troubleshooting as necessary. Reviews computerized patient information and test requests; checks daily logs and summaries for accuracy and cancels tests as authorized. Reviews and updates patient insurance records and maintains standing order files. Reconciles outstanding billing issues as related to registration information.

Practices universal precautions, barrier protection methods, infection control and isolation procedures when working with body fluids and other contagion to ensure a safe work environment. Responds to telephone inquiries from medical staff concerning statusof patient testing. Acts as a resource for the referral laboratory regarding specimen requirements and ordering procedures. Assists in training new staff or students in blood collection and/ or specimen processing as directed.

Interacts with patients and hospital staff in person or on the telephone in an appropriate manner. Registers, collects and receives blood and non blood specimens. Reviews test requisitions and specimen labels for accurate information and orders tests appropriately: follows up on all tests with incomplete information or questionable test orders. Schedules and arrives lab appointments.

Verifies and updates insurance information and triages specimens to the proper testing facility. Obtains waivers for Medicare coverage when applicable. Processes all emergency orders (STATS) within the required time frame. Preserves the integrity of each sample prior to distributing them to the appropriate department.

Processes and prepares referral specimens for shipping to reference laboratories. Reconciles outstanding test orders that have not been resolved through standard operating procedures. Initiates intervention on unacceptable specimens, as needed. Participates in quality improvement activities as it relates to registration procedures, wait times, phlebotomy, processing and the transportation of specimens.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or equivalent. 2 yrs relevant phlebotomy experience required. Previous processing, or customer service experience preferred; type minimum 35 words per minute preferred, computer skills; medical terminology; Phlebotomy certification preferred. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (Medium): 20-50 lbs; 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 11-25 lbs, 34-66% of the workday (frequently); 01-10 lbs, 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 50 lbs max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs; Occasional to frequent standing & walking, Occasional sitting, Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing), Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.

Environmental exposures include, but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure Bio-hazardous waste Chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors Communicable diseases Electrical shock, Floor Surfaces, Hot/Cold Temperatures, Indoor/Outdoor conditions, Latex, Lighting, Patient care/handling injuries, Radiation, Shift work, Travel may be required. Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
