The Network Architect in Information Technology Services (ITS) reports to the Associate Director of Network Design and Engineering. S/he is responsible, in consultation with the Associate Director, for the effective design, implementation and operation of the University at Albany network infrastructure spanning multiple campuses and locations in the Capital Region. The network serves nearly 25,000 University faculty, staff and students and is in a consistent pattern of growth and a constant cycle of replacement that enables and supports academic, research and administrative innovation.

This position requires a strong background in network and data center technologies, with additional experience in voice / telecommunications technologies a plus, to help support the management of enterprise operations. The specific disciplines may include but are not limited to IP/video transports, firewall/IDS/IPS security, load balancers, management, monitoring, wireless, network virtualization, cloud and high availability infrastructures.

This position is classified as an essential employee.

Represent the network service as a subject matter expert and serve as a primary contributor for network architecture and project design phase activities

Directly participate in the implementation, operation, maintenance and growth of all network infrastructure at the University

Install, configure, maintain and support network infrastructure applications

Plan and build infrastructure that supports growth of IoT

Assist the Associate Director in budget planning by anticipating projects and providing cost estimates

Train, develop and mentor less senior staff

Develop and maintain network current and future state documentation

Develop and maintain familiarity with the customers of the network infrastructure service, their demands on the service, and the service offerings available to and in use by each

Manage network service projects, as needed

Engage vendors when developing project solutions and exploring new technologies

Be available to provide support and consultation outside normal business hours, including occasional evenings, holidays, or weekends, within reasonable professional obligation and expectation, to ensure continuous availability of ITS services

Job Requirements:Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization

Eight (8) years of relevant experience with network design and engineering in a similar environment including use of the following technologies: switching, routing, Wi-Fi, VoIP, and firewall standards and protocols including IP, IPv6, STP, OSPF, BGP, VxLAN, IPSec, 802.11ac, and SIP

Excellent problem solving and diagnostic skills across all layers of the OSI model

Experience with fiber optic and copper cabling standards

Excellent written and verbal communications skills

Commitment to serving the needs of a diverse population and fostering an inclusive environment

Preferred Qualifications:
Ten (10) years of relevant network experience

Experience operating a wireless access environment of at least 500 access points

Experience operating a network supporting a large-scale VoIP deployment

Experience with virtualized/container-based/cloud networking within VMware, OpenStack, or AWS

Experience working with VMware NSX

Experience with advanced threat management implementations such as Palo Alto, Checkpoint, or Fortinet

Experience working in a multi-vendor network infrastructure

Enterprise level networking certification from a major provider (ie. CCNA, JNCIA, etc.)

Scripting Experience

PMP certification

ITIL certification
