This Associate Director, Marketing Procurement is part of the Global Supplier Management (GSM) organization. The Associate Director of Marketing Services Procurement is responsible for the strategic sourcing activity in support of all Merck Animal Health (MAH) species marketing services requirements. The categories of activity include but are not limited to Advertising, Media (Traditional, Social & Digital), Contract Sales organization (CSO), Print, Market Research, Public Relations, Branding, Events. This newly created position will have a great deal of opportunity to work directly with Food Production business unit heads and global marketing species heads to create sourcing strategies and deliver on divisional objectives.

The Associate Director will take an active role in the development of procurement strategy, global category management, contract management, risk management, stakeholder management, and supplier value management within the categories. The Associate Director will develop and maintain strong relationships with regional marketing services procurement leads as well as other divisions of Merck. The Associate Director has the responsibility to leverage the procurement support model (including the transactional execution strategy) for key global markets and optimize the structure to ensure compliant effective sourcing within the commercial business units. The role reports to the Director of Marketing Services – Indirect Procurement in Animal Health – Global Supplier Management (GSM).

Primary activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Procurement Leadership
    – Provide the leadership, strategy and policy for the category building a high-performance engagement model with the business and regions.

  • Organizational Development
    – Support the building of a Center of Expertise in commercial services who have direct responsibility for sourcing and projects.

  • Process
    – Realize sourcing management, supplier value management, risk management, supplier diversity as core sustainable processes and enablers of delivery.

  • Commercial Categories Scope
    – Develop, execute and implement sourcing strategies for indirect categories mainly in marketing services (Advertising, Media (Traditional, Social & Digital), Contract Sales Organization (CSO), Print, Market Research, Public Relations, Branding, and Events) globally. Represents Animal Health and participates in category development and implementation programs, such as SSC (Strategic Sourcing Councils) forums. Liaises well across all AH GSM, corporate procurement and business functions to ensure global and regional category spends are managed in line with agreed regional and global sourcing strategies.

  • Sourcing Management
    – Participates in the development of category sourcing strategies and ensure robust execution of same within region using deep insights using analytics as a tool. Be a strong Sourcing Management Process (SMP) expert and uses the SMP tools and practices as a way to create and implement source plans to manage assurance of supply, quality, service, cost, innovation and compliance and oversee sustainable value delivery throughout. Responsible for presenting strategy and supplier award decisions and apply for approval according to the Merck Animal Health Global Supplier Management (GSM) process and requirements.

  • Proactive Cost Management
    – Achieves cost control, cost reduction, and cost containment targets, and adds value to areas of expenditure through a strong total cost focus. Develops a cost reduction pipeline for indirect categories with Animal Health Regional Leads, in strict alignment the overall global strategies. Ensure proper reporting and documenting in accordance with the company policies and standards.

  • Market Knowledge
    – Links market knowledge to regional requirements and category spend by supporting the creation of breakthrough strategies and value creation.

  • Stakeholder Management and Business Sponsorship
    – Liaises with Animal Health Global Supplier Management (GSM) Regional Leads to ensure Animal Health GSM is well represented globally across all regions: EMEA, NA, LATAM and APJ. Assures that the category supply strategies and agreements are well understood by the Regional Leads and that they are able to describe the benefits to regional stakeholders. Supports Regional Leads in analyzing customer’s future business needs and understands strategic business requirements at 1-3-5 year horizon to incorporate into category objectives and future strategies.

  • Collaboration
    – will develop, build and maintain strong relationships with peers across Global Human Health Marketing Procurement.

  • Compliance
    – ensuring compliance with all Merck local and global Purchasing policies and standards.

  • Performance
    – Deliver on agreed KPIs like, cost reduction, days payable outstanding improvement, diverse supplier spend, as well other stakeholder business KPIs.

  • Change Management
    – Adopt high quality change practices with customers and stakeholders, building and implementing an organization which is sustainable.

  • Supplier Value Management
    – Implement Supplier Value Management with the key suppliers in this category to foster innovation, manage supplier performance, establish a Governance Model, and ensure continuous improvement.


Education Minimum Requirement:

  • A Bachelor’s degree
  • Graduate degree preferred

Required Experience and Skills:

  • At least seven (7) years of sourcing strategic sourcing and procurement experience in the Consumer, Animal health or related industries
  • Commercially astute with an understanding of and ability to interpret company financials
  • Must be adaptable in dealing with ambiguous and complex environments
  • Able to effectively lead work within diverse cross functional teams to achieve client, Division, and Company goals
  • Expert use of excel, pivot tables, power point and word documents
  • The ability to work independently with all levels of the organization, and demonstrate the following skills:

    • Escalation of issues I concerns to management, as appropriate in a timely manner
    • Ability to prioritize, align and simplify

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • A background in & knowledge of Animal Health commercial operations, suppliers and procurement
  • Excellent communication, relationship building, and leadership skills
  • Must be adaptable in dealing with ambiguous and complex environments
  • Able to effectively lead work within diverse cross functional teams to achieve client, Division, and Company goals
  • Marketing Services Procurement experience
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to derive insights from data
