Responsibilities of the Accounting Manager:

An Accounting Manager is responsible for providing support, oversight, training and advice to clients and accountants. Management responsibilities could include any or all of the following:

  • Direct, coach, mentor, and review the work of the accountants
  • Conduct regular, prescheduled management reviews
  • Communicate with clients and Executive Management relating to accountant performance
  • Respond to client concerns/issues
  • Interview and recommend the hiring of qualified accountant candidates
  • Conduct performance reviews
  • Implement and manage all client services related activity (in conjunction with Executive Management, to include policies, procedures, etc.)
  • Review and approve financial statements and supporting information
  • Provide and interpret financial reports (when higher level services are required)
  • Present financial statements to Boards and/or Committees
  • Monitor and interpret cash flows
  • Develop financial management mechanisms that minimize financial risk
  • Conduct reviews and evaluations for cost-reduction opportunities
  • Assess and clean up a new client’s financial systems
  • Provide regular financial reviews when required
  • Provide CFO/advisory services
  • Train accountants on new clients
  • Train clients on an accounting system and/or interpretation of financial data
  • Manage clients’ ongoing financial and accounting operations (and related systems)
  • Audit scheduling
  • Management and responsibility of the audit process (assisting/training accountants as required, establishing and enforcing deadlines, reviewing PBC list with accountants and client to delegate duties, etc.)
  • Comprehensive review of audit packages prepared by accountants
  • Liaise with auditors before, during and after audit process is complete. CSM’s are required to “check in” with auditors throughout the audit process. A follow-up is required on all audits, by CSS and CSM.
  • Monitor and manage fixed fee clients to meet profitability targets
  • Develop external relationships with appropriate contacts, e.g. auditors, vendors, bankers and statutory organizations such as the IRS or other government agencies.
  • Keep abreast of changes in financial regulations and communicating said changes to management/staff
  • Weekly email communication with CSS, to include words of encouragement and inspirational quotes
  • Participate in all weekly management calls, monthly management meetings and annual management retreats.
  • Attend and participate in all staff meetings
  • Execute special projects as requested by Executive Management
  • Communicate with Executive Management regarding clients and staff
  • Earn CPE credits as required by Executive Management
  • Attend networking events as required by Executive Management
  • Fully support our “Help Us Help Others” campaign – CSM is setting an example for CSS/staff

Qualifications of the Accounting Manager:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting
  • A minimum of eight years of general ledger accounting experience
  • A minimum of five years of nonprofit accounting experience
  • Demonstrated experience leading and managing a team or individuals
  • Extensive knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
  • Extensive experience with data entry, recordkeeping and computer operation
  • Advanced knowledge Microsoft Office, Excel, QuickBooks, and QuickBooks Online
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, project management, and communication skills
  • Experience in Audit preparation
  • Ability to function well in a team-oriented environment (face to face or virtual)
  • The desire and ability to become proficient with SAGE Intacct and other third-party applications
  • When serving remote clients, the ability to work from home independently
